In today’s interconnected world, stress, anxiety, and burnout about global events are increasingly common. Some events can seem trivial to some, like the Euro Finals or the latest Hurling fixtures. Meanwhile, some events are widely seen as catastrophic, like election results, climate disasters, and devastating acts against human lives.
All the same, powerlessness and grief stemming from these can significantly impact your daily life. Further, these impacts can include insomnia and sleep issues, gut health issues, a persistent sense of dread, and more.
And the constant barrage of information can make these burdens inescapable.
With hope and strength, you may read this article to take back control of the direction of your life. Explore building connections, taking tangible actions, and using tools like mindfulness and hypnosis to support this journey.
Reconnect with Yourself
We often don’t realise in the moment when we’re on ‘autopilot’ or mentally detached due to overwhelm. This makes focus and presence all the more crucial when dealing with any pressures in life.
Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep-breathing exercises, can ground you back into the present. These techniques help to calm the mind, reduce tension levels, and to find enough balance to start taking purposeful action.
Small acts can also be especially powerful in piercing through confused fight-or-flight responses. For example, you may ‘logically know’ the practical inconsequence of stepping outside, finding one plastic bottle on the street, and placing it in a bin. Yet when you do it anyway, you will feel something shift. Some power taken back.
Another effective method is regularly maintaining a journal. This can take many forms, from a daily gratitude journal, to more extensive jotting of your thoughts and experiences. In all cases, journaling is a tool for reaching clarity and perspective.
By clearing the mental clutter, it becomes easier to process emotions, and then identify patterns which can contribute to your stress, and so your stress relief.

How Does Gratitude Build Resilience Against Stress?
Strengthen Family Bonds
Family and friends can be a great source of support during stressful times, yet often our instinct is to recoil when overwhelmed. By purposefully engaging in regular activities with loved ones, from dinners and game nights to casual walks in the park, we can foster stronger senses of trust, togetherness, and security. These moments of connection with others can grant comfort and perspective on world events and where our lives fit amongst them.
Open communication within family and close circles is also vital. Sharing your feelings and listening to others can create a supportive environment where everyone feels truly heard and “seen”. This mutual support can cut through feelings of isolation and anxiety and make way for reflection and opportunity for change.
Embrace Community and Belonging
Engaging with and reaching out to your community can fulfil a greater sense of purpose and belonging. If you haven’t done something like this before, you can search social media and search engines for local groups and upcoming events. You might show up solo or with family to a group activity or meeting. And you might even end up volunteering for something!
Participating in the communities and groups around you help shift your focus from global stressors to local, tangible efforts. These often organically lead to personal growth and learning through sharing experiences and strategies with others facing similar challenges. You may even become someone others come to for comfort and practical advice!
Channel Energy into Action
Transforming anxiety, frustration, and overwhelm into tangible actions is empowering. By starting with small, immediate acts, you build momentum to achieve larger goals, and with this returns your sense of control and purpose.
This can be community-based, or begin with personal actions and change, from learning a new skill to exercising to starting a new creative project. The key is to respond, instead of allowing powerless and overwhelm to fester.
Find a productive outlet. Own your purpose!
