The Teenage Years are pivotal in a person’s life. It can be seen as the first level of how or what you grow up to be. It has very little to do with the profession or career. But it plays a major role in moulding your personality and shaping you to become your future self.
Hypnosis works at the subconscious level where a lot of the emotional issues lie. These may be triggered by certain factors causing anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia and negative thoughts. Hypnosis/hypnotherapy, along with our unique. multi-therapy approach can bypass the conscious level and resolve at the core.
Counselling and other therapies can help, but it may not necessarily resolve the issue. Hypnosis is fast and effective, providing permanent results. This is why it is climbing as an alternative approach to conventional therapy.
With that, we should consider how sensitive and open this age group is towards different types of mental illnesses. Today, mental illness is one of the biggest challenges faced by the world. Unfortunately, teenagers are its main victims, especially in Europe where approximately 1 in 5 teens suffer from one mental disease. Teenagers are endangered by illnesses and disorders such as depression, anxiety, borderline personality, and attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), which in serious cases can lead to suicidal thoughts.
How does social media affects teenager’s mental health?
According to research, the root cause of most mental disorders among teens is social media. Statistics show that teenagers spend a minimum of four hours per day scrolling through social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. This contributes the most towards mental disturbances.
How so? Take ADHD, for example. Teens are most exposed to this disorder, and they become even more affected when they spend hours on social media and stay isolated in the real world.
Another reason teenage mental health is so prevalent is due to FOMO (fear of missing out). Teens want and NEED to stay updated with the latest trends. These updates and trends are posted online constantly.
This endless scrolling then leads to sleep deprivation and other dangerous stages like depression and social anxiety. At the Hypnosis and Therapy Centre, we specialise in using Hypnosis to communicate with the subconscious mind, resolving underlying issues from the core. We work with clients every day who deal with anxiety and panic attacks in a variety of forms and severities. Working at the unconscious level, we can bypass all of the baggage and get straight to the core issue.
Insomnia and other sleeping issues are something Caitríona and Fiachra have incredible success in. Many of our clients have suffered from Insomnia for many years, many taking sleeping medication for years. Our programmes resolve the subconscious issues, allowing them to be back in control of their sleep. Read our reviews or FAQs for more information or get in touch!
How do teenagers feel when they are suffering from mental health issues?
In serious cases, a person who has a mental illness can be a threat to themselves and others around them. The worst scenario is when the teenagers feel hesitant or humiliated in seeking help from professionals or elders.
The most common symptom to recognise such a situation is when there is a decline in the academic results of the teen. This is not always a factor (which is why parenting is so difficult at times!).
Apart from this, the kid may feel restless most of the time and may suffer from insomnia or hypersomnia (in minor cases). While some teens mask their condition pretty well, most of them may show persistent sadness, anxiety and irritability in front of family and friends. Losing interest in hobbies and constant fatigue are other red flags that indicate mental illness.
What can parents do to help their teenager’s mental health?
Parents are the first few to get hints of the mental disorder among their children. The best thing they can do to help their teen is to talk to them where possible about their misery and complications.
Although it can seem impossible to draw information out of your teen at times, it is worth trying. It is also important to attempt to spend time with their teens to develop trust.
Parents facing such a situation with their teen can also consult a therapist. Teenagers, and people in general, are becoming much more open to seeing therapists today. This is a massive change in society and will hopefully continue to be encouraged. Hypnosis is fast and effective and does not require long-term counselling. Hypnotherapy is growing as a treatment for mental health issues, and rightly so!
Another way to help mental illness is by cutting off the root cause, which in most cases is social media. Using parental control where appropriate, or limiting screen time is the best precaution you can take at the early stages of your child’s teenage.
How important is mental health in teenagers?
Mental health plays a vital role in building your personality base, specifically among teens. Therefore, it is mandatory to care for your teen’s mental health and make sure to discuss their life with them at every stage. Showing support without being too nosy and strict, being lenient, motivating (not pushing), and being friendly are some measures you can take to avoid your teen from getting affected by mental health-related issues.
Important points: How mental health can affect your life
Here are some talking points to remind us how Teenage Mental Health, along with mental health for children and adults alike, is actually an important stage in shaping our lives:
- Good mental health develops resilience and helps to cope with the challenges of life. This can affect our quality of life at times. But when teenagers surpass the bad days, they can use that as motivation for the future hurdles of life
- Mental health is co-related with productivity and financial stability, which affects our adulthood greatly
- Most suicidal cases are directly linked with mental disorders, especially depression. Suicide is more prevalent in males, but it is indeed vital to nurture anyone who is suffering from mental issue issues. Hypnotherapy/Hypnosis is extremely efficient and effective in this regard. The Hypnosis and Therapy Centre has helped countless clients since 2004 who battle anxiety, depression, confidence, stress and other mental health related issues. Our Free Phone Consultation can provide guidance and information if you want to resolve your issues and get back in control of your life
- Mental Health affects physical health greatly. Some people face eating disorders during this time. They also can stop all physical activity. Putting on weight is not necessarily the issue here. It is the health of your organs that is also important to focus on when physical activity is not part of your life. Activity releases positive endorphins in your brain, which aids your mental health! A lot of people turn to physical activity and sports. This improves their mental health, then use therapy to guide them through
- Mental Health issues can also negatively affect your relationships, be it family, friends or more intimate relationships. Relationships go up and down (and side to side!). This is a normal part of life, but can be exacerbated by teenage mental health issues
- Mental health issues can lead to smoking, drinking, panic attacks, other addictions, sleeping issues and other physical ailments. It is important that our mental health is consistently worked on and managed. Here is a list of services we treat at the Hypnosis and Therapy Centre
Mental health is something we all deal with, and have dealt with!
The Teenage Years are something we all go through. If you look back at your childhood and compare to all the crazy things you went through, you turned out okay (or at least alive!). It is very normal to go through turbulence at this age, be it emotions, hormones or mental health related. Keep this in mind when worrying about your teenager’s mental health. They may just be going through a tough time, they may not need professional help. Be there for them and guide them through this time.
If in doubt, speak with them. If you can’t, reach out to someone who can. Or indeed you can get in touch with the Hypnosis and Therapy Centre.
